Opening Our Doors is the largest day of free cultural events in Greater Boston that will take place on Columbus Day, October 13, 2014, from 10:00AM to 4:00PM. The festival will hold over 60 arts and cultural activities throughout the day in over 15 locations all across the Fenway Cultural District for FREE. Highlights this year include a large community mural panting led by Jamaica Plain-based artist, Alex Cook, a Cymbal Jungle with Kadence Arts, storytelling with Norah Dooley of massmouth and, as always, free cupcakes. Additional programming includes free admission to the Museum of Fine Arts, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Fenway Studios, and The Mary Baker Eddy Library Mapparium., along with a behind-the-scenes experience at the Huntington Theatre Co., Boston Children’s Theatre, and Wheelock Family Theatre. This event is organized by the 22 members of The Fenway Alliance, along with various community organizations and independent artists. They all participate in the full-day event and offer an opportunity to directly experience the cultural riches of the Fenway Cultural District.
The Fenway Alliance is looking for volunteers to help guide visitors to different locations/events, since the festival encompasses the entire Fenway. As points of reference, the Fenway stretches from Wheelock College, located on The Riverway, to Fenway Studios on Ipswich St, to the Christian Science Plaza.
We welcome all who are interested in volunteering to join us! Each volunteer will need to be available for at least one, 3-hour shift, between 9:30AM and 4:30PM, on the day of the event. Most will be placed on the Christian Science Plaza and Evans Way Park, two of the outdoor spaces that are programmed with performances and activities. Those who sign up must also be available to attend a 45-minute orientation session in mid-September. Location and date TBD, but expect it to be held on a weekday around 6 PM.
All volunteers will receive an awesome OOD T-shirt, along with a small Fenway Cultural District gift.
