The Fenway is rich in cultural institutions working to increase the engagement of all community members. Unfortunately, the past seven years have seen an explosion of luxury developments. This growth poses the danger of pricing residents and artists out of the neighborhood. Opening Our Doors Artists’ Residencies (OAR) mitigates the risk of socio-economic alienation by bringing together two populations—Fenway youth and seniors, who are often disconnected due to scheduling, finances, and perceived lack of common ground. We believe communal art-making breaks down barriers to interaction. OAR will bring youth and seniors together for art experiences led by renowned local artists, storytellers, chefs, and performers. Employing these resident artists, OAR provides communicative links between the Fenway’s populace and its major institutions, increasing local’s institutional representation. OAR has received substantial support from the National Endowment for the Arts, and it is currently a finalist for ArtPlace America’s National Creative Placemaking Fund.
